HOUSE IN IXELLES – 1/3
Full renovation (2011 - 2013)

The house is located on a plot with a width limited to 3.6m, implying a widespread circulation problem.

On the ground floor, four adjoining rooms turned the living space into a passageway where, moreover, no light entered. In addition, sunlight is scarce throughout the plot, due to a high hangar wall running along its south side.

The two challenges therefore consisted of reorganizing the spaces around functional circulation and bringing in natural light. Furthermore, we wanted to provide a real connection with nature, despite the urban environment.

HOUSE IN IXELLES – 2/3

The proposal consisted, on the one hand, in removing the rear annexes to restore the layout of a two-room house in direct succession and, on the other, in placing the living room in the garden, separated from the house by a courtyard.

This courtyard is conceived as the lungs of the house, which would be crossed in any season to reach the living room, thus integrating the climatic elements into the course of daily activities.

The living room is located on the terrace and heated by the floor. It is protected from the neighbours' view while being completely glazed to the outside.

HOUSE IN IXELLES – 3/3

The front façade features an office situated under the roof, which is transformed to open up and provide a view of a nice sloping street, in the axis of the house.

Inside, the masonry of the right-hand party wall is exposed everywhere, providing a visual link between the rooms and with the garden.
