RECREATIONAL HOUSING IN THE PAYS DE CHIMAY FOREST – 1/3
Competition (2015 - 2016)

A competition organized by the Forêts d'Ardenne concerned a lightweight wooden habitat for their leisure areas. In these regions, camping and caravanning areas generally have a negative landscape impact, due to a lack of integration into their surroundings.

Thus, and as part of an overall consideration, we are not proposing lightweight structures here, but rather elements which are anchored in their site and connect it to its context.

The forest is seen here as a sanctuary to be protected, with these elements standing on its edge like the towers of a citadel. A few of them are enough to give the site an identity and enhance the existing facilities.

RECREATIONAL HOUSING IN THE PAYS DE CHIMAY FOREST – 2/3

This project features cylindrical wooden modules evoking monumental tree stumps. They set up in the Forêt du Pays de Chimay, whose black woodpecker emblem inspired their design. Like this bird, we propose the image of being housed in the cavity of a giant oak tree.

In this once isolated region of the Ardennes, we aim to encourage a reconnection with oneself and nature.

The wooden modules are therefore introverted and turn their backs on the campsite. Their entrance, discovered as you circumnavigate them, emerges as a deep breach facing the forest. A stone terrace then leads into the interior.

RECREATIONAL HOUSING IN THE PAYS DE CHIMAY FOREST – 3/3

The interior space surprises with its double height and its orthogonal geometry in contrast with the cylindrical exterior volume. The solid laminated panel walls give the impression of being inside a large wooden mass hollowed out by alcoves. These alcoves are furnished with beds akin to those in Japanese hotel capsules.

The double-height living room benefits from an intimate atmosphere with subdued light, as if filtered through foliage. And its triangular bay slides completely out onto the entrance terrace facing the forest.
